About Repository

ABOUT REPOSITORY

We need different types of goods in our day-to-day life. We may buy some of these items in bulk and store them in our house. Similarly, businessmen also need a variety of goods for their use. Some of them may not be available all the time. But, they need those items throughout the year without any break.
Take the example of a sugar factory. It needs sugarcane as raw material for production of sugar. You know that sugarcane is produced during a particular period of the year. Since sugar production takes place throughout the year, there is a need to supply sugarcane continuously. But how is it possible? Here storage of sugarcane in sufficient quantity is required. Again, after production of sugar it requires some time for sale or distribution. Thus, the need for storage arises both for raw material as well as finished products. Storage involves proper arrangement for preserving goods from the time of their production or purchase till the actual use. When this storage is done on a large scale and in a specified manner it is called ‘Repository’. The place where goods are kept is called ‘repository’. The person in charge of repository is called ‘Repository-keeper’.
Repository refers to the activities involving storage of goods on a large-scale in a systematic and orderly manner and making them available conveniently when needed. In other words, repository means holding or preserving goods in huge quantities from the time of their purchase or production till their actual use or sale.
Repository management systems (RMS) are best described as the advanced technology and operating processes that optimize all repository functions. These functions typically begin with receipts from suppliers and end with shipments to customers, and include all inventory movements and information flows in between. Repository management systems have typically been associated with larger, more complex distribution operations. Small, non-complex distribution facilities have historically not been viewed as candidates to significantly streamline operations and reduce costs.

A repository management system (RMS) is an enterprise software application that automates and manages the processes of an organization’s repository. RMS provides a centralized software interface for processing, managing and monitoring a repository's operational processes.
Repository management system may also be called an inventory management system and store management system.
A repository management system (RMS) is a software application that supports the day-to-day operations in a repository. RMS programs enable centralized management of tasks such as tracking inventory levels and stock locations.
The process of physical handling of goods in and out of the repository is an extensive and costly operation. To keep costs as low as possible, it is essential that quantity and placement of the items are accurate. To have efficient repository processes, the company must define the repository in terms of layout, put-away and pick logic, as well as internal replenishment information.
Repository Management Systems is aimed at companies that need to receive and ship products, while maintaining an optimum space usage and knowing specifically where all products are stored at any given time. Goods can either be stored in predefined (fixed) bins or in random (floating) bins, depending on the need for optimization and the expertise of the repository personnel.

The RMS granules provide functionality for executing more advanced repository processes such as handling items within a repository by zone and bin level, handling directed put-away and pick, and the development of an automated data capture system (ADCS).
